Our Comprehensive Care Pathway

Orchard Park Hospital (OPH) is a 30-bed inpatient psychiatric facility for youth between the ages of 5 to 17 years old. Thirteen beds are located on the Child Unit, thirteen beds on the Adolescent Unit, and four beds on the Special Care Unit. The hospital is equipped with a gymnasium and outside area, and the entire hospital is mobility accessible.

Youth are medically cleared by local Emergency Departments before admission to the proper unit at OPH. Shortly after arrival, the following assessments are conducted: Intake, Psychiatric Evaluation, Nursing, Biopsychosocial, Activity, and Education. A thorough history & physical is completed by a physician or nurse practitioner following admission.

The patient is then introduced to the unit, with a walk-through to become acquainted with their surroundings. Both the patient and guardian receive a Handbook outlining Patient Rights, daily activities, appropriate clothing, visitation, etc.

Treatment Planning begins by involving the patient and guardian in the process to identify the needs to be addressed on the unit. Throughout the youth’s stay, the Treatment Plan is updated as goals and objectives are met and resolved.

Treatment Team Meetings occur within the first 72 hours of admission. The patient can talk with the members of the Treatment Team, ask questions, and give input into their therapeutic interventions. The guardian is also invited to join. Medications are discussed at this point to better educate the patient and/or guardian.

Throughout their stay, the youth engage in individual, family, and group therapies. Activity therapy, education coordination, and medication groups are provided. The attending psychiatrist or nurse practitioner meets with each patient on a daily basis.

Many patients also deal with the co-occurring issue of substance use. We educate the youth on its effects and how it contributes to their current mental health diagnosis. During such interventions, we help the patient develop healthy coping skills and provide them with the tools to deal more confidently with their issues and develop a healthier self-esteem.

Upon discharge, follow-up appointments are scheduled with the individual’s outpatient psychiatrist and clinical therapist. We also contact their school to create awareness of the youth’s return. Lastly, a Personal Safety Plan is devised by the patient, in conjunction with the Treatment Team, to better equip that individual to identify triggers and utilize coping skills. A list of resources is also developed for the individual to contact if a crisis occurs in the future.
